WSIS and the Global Digital Compact : The Evolution and Future of UN Internet Governance

As part of the Summit of the Future, the United Nations Member States in 2024 adopted a Global Digital Compact (GDC). The stated objective is to reap the “potential benefits for the well-being and advancement of people and societies and for our planet”. However, the GDC leaves open its implementation. This year is the 20-year review of the World Summit on the Information Society, known as WSIS+20. The WSIS+20 review will provide an opportunity also to discuss the implementation of the GDC. One option could be to use the existing structure of the WSIS Forum and fold the GDC implmentation into the WSIS follow-up process which includes a revision of the role of the IGF.
